Self-build of a masonry heater in the Kachelofen style

Masonry heater finished with bonded porcelain stoneware tilesA fine example of assisted self-build for this masonry heater, clad in the manner of a Kachelofen. Near Orléans, a 1950s town house to which a timber extension was added on the north side. Our customer wanted to install a masonry heater as a self-build. We supplied the installation advice and the materials, along with occasional technical help on site for the connections and first firings.

Masonry heater cladding in grog slabs (firebricks and refractory slabs).

The sensible choice was made to place this heater straddling the old and new parts of the house, so as to reuse the existing chimney flue. Our customer assembled the heater himself. It is a Brunner HKD4- firebox, with 6 metres of heat store. A heated bench, ideal for long winter evenings, was built in, extending the seating in the living room. The porcelain stoneware finish, bonded directly to the cladding, completes the whole, now ready for many long years of gentle warmth.
