The heater occupies the corner of a beamed kitchen, set on a floor of patterned cement tiles whose patterns it answers, by contrast, with restraint: pale masonry, without finishing render at the time of these pictures.
The heated bench is treated on two levels, like two wide steps: the first serves as a low seat, the second as a shelf. Both are hollow — the flue gases pass through them before reaching the chimney stack — and each has its own oval cleaning door on the side.

The oven is set directly above the firebox, both closed by a glazed door. This is the most efficient position: the cooking chamber receives the flue gases as they leave the firebox, when they are hottest, before they come back down to give up the rest of their heat to the mass and the bench.
